I loved watching “Moonstruck”, one of my favorite movies with everyone at IAP. Although I have watched the movie many times, I have come away with a fresh perspective. I agree that the power of Moonstruck lies in the allegory juxtaposed with scenes of ordinary life bringing a sweet nostalgia for my Italian American family.
My father always said that his favorite thing in all the world was sitting around the kitchen table having cake and coffee with family. Moonstruck feels like that.
One aspect that didn’t resonate with your generation was the Nonno with the dogs. It could have been contrived to get the Nonno to walk around the neighborhood to meet his friends or catch Rose with a man, but I believe it’s a completely Italian American convention to have a bond with the dogs.
My grandmother who lived in her daughters house would take the bus to the butcher and buy two small filet mignon steaks for herself and her poodle. She also complained that nobody would wash the dogs face. My grandfathers on my fathers side bull terriers was his faithful companion and always treated like royalty.
My husbands aunt wouldn’t even wait until we were finished eating before she would grab food the the dogs.
However, the line we love best is “Old Man, you feed one more piece of my food to those dogs, I’ll kick you til your dead”
If for no other reason than for Olivia Dukakis to deliver this line, then the dogs belong in the movie.
The line is often said by my daughters to their father today. It may sound harsh but we this is the way we speak.
So I can’t wait for “Fatso” Please make it your next movie!! No one in my family can utter the phrase “I forgot” with the proper response. I think you know.
